“Work life balance definitely better than international firm, but don’t get me wrong thinking that the hours must be reasonable all the time. You HAVE to draft a lot of documents, especially before court hearing, which can burn your midnight quite often.

The culture is rather conservative. Most people are pro-government in their bones. They are not harsh, but certainly cold. Don’t expect genuine human interaction here.

To be honest, this is not the right place for young lawyers. My advice is be brave and try private practice first, at least you have chance to jump to DOJ after qualified for some years, but unlikely vice versa.“– Anonymous – 5.9.2017

“Basic competency questions such as why study law

Surprisingly they do ask about legal questions which apparently have nothing to do with DOJ’s work. They want to test if you really like law by self reading out of syllabus material. For example at my year, they asked me about my view on Hong Kong’s family law, while asked my friend about animal law.

Be careful when they ask you political questions. It’s better to polish your answer in a way which appears to be 講完好似無講過。“– Anonymous – 5.9.2017
