“Most non-french people in my mind could find it very hard to adapt to the heavy french culture/management. The french are all from the same schools (Ecole polytechnique, Centrale Paris…), and have the same mindset, not as international as a big US bank can be for example. Do not underestimate this point. It is VERY difficult to fit in if you aren’t from that background.

The junior system is mainly composed of hiring long term interns (i.e. trainees or VIEs) and making them do all the junior work. Most of the time, when your traineeship comes towards an end in the 1st year your manager would offer you to extend your traineeship for one more year (no salary increase, no benefits but additional works/responsibilities). It’s cheaper for the bank as trainees aren‘t full time workers officially, don’t have to pay a bonus, cannot enjoy many benefits as those perms etc etc.

You really need to think carefully about it. Its relatively easy to be a trainee there compared with other graduate positions in other banks. However, the fact that you’re an intern (i.e called trainee or VIE there) for 1 year or 2 years means you are getting paid a lot less than your peers at other firms. Plus it’s quite risky, since they will not renew your contract or promote you to full time in most cases, and you can find yourself out of a job and 1 year or 2 years out of uni with only internships, which can make it quite hard to lateral…
